Job opening in Magnets,Vacuum & Cryo
Laser engineer
If a potentially good or excellent match, we will contact you within 3 week from applying.
As a member of the magnets team, we are looking for a laser engineer with strong written and oral communication skills, understanding complex technical issues and a problem-solving mindset. The successful candidate will develop the necessary engraving techniques and procure equipment for the production of prototypes magnets made with copper and HTS materials, then scaling to the mass production of engraved HTS wide tapes for the stellarator experiment and power plants, as well as for other applications.
Responsibilities
Development phase
Define and carry out campaigns of tests with different lasers and coordinate other tests with partners/contractors as required, to engrave Cu-plastic flexible connections for various small experimental magnets
Repeat the same developments of laser parameters and engraving procedures with commercial HTS tapes first, then later with Renaissance Fusion HTS product
Assess test results to define the best laser configuration and parameters
Operate the roll-to-roll machinery which will engrave prototypical stellarator shapes (and others) into small copper magnets and the HTS carpets produced by Renaissance Fusion
Mass production
Develop the manufacturing procedures and tooling for mass production of HTS carpets
Set-up the factory and machinery required for the mass production of engraved HTS carpets to be used in superconducting magnets for various applications (fusion, particle accelerators, undulators, medical, energy storage, etc.)
Manage and supervise the mass production
Scientific communication and monitoring
Prepare scientific reports (presentation, poster…) and represent RF to scientific conferences and workshops
Participate in the writing of scientific papers.
Occasionally assist other groups (Fusion Engineering, HTS and/or Liquid Metals) if they have a peak in workload in the areas of design and modeling. Equivalently, work with mechanical engineers from other groups, if magnet group has a peak in design and modeling activities and develop this spirit of mutual support
Qualifications -essential:
Bachelor’s degree/Bac +5 in applied physics, mechanical engineering or related field
3+ years of experience in laser engineering and engraving
1+ years of experience in preparation of technical specifications and procurement of components
Experience with Python or other computational software
Technical coordination from design to assembly
Fluent in English (B2-C1)
Qualifications -desirable:
Previous experience in the semiconductor industry or high-tech laboratories is a plus
Previous experience in follow-up (junior) of development and manufacturing contracts, preferably on electromechanical or semiconductor components
