Job opening in Example

Example Job - Change

If a potentially good or excellent match, we will contact you within 3 weeks from applying.

We are forming a team of the brightest, most driven scientists and engineers to realize and commercialize non-fusion HTS magnets and Liquid Metal (LM) solutions within 2 years, and fusion magnets and integrated fusion solutions within 10 years.

Responsibilities

Leader responsibilities:

  • Form and lead the Magnet, Vessel and Cryostat (MVC) department.

  • Grow the department to at least 8 engineers in the first 6 months. Play a major role in talent acquisition, including writing job descriptions and conducting job interviews. Proactively scout and attract talents.

  • Train the group-leaders and department heads of tomorrow.

  • As soon as appropriate, organize the department in groups. Appoint, empower, inspire and coordinate the group-leaders.

  • Spark and coordinate mission-driven brainstorm discussions, as needed. Contribute to them and to their rapid convergence to actionable decisions and designs.

  • Inspire, motivate and guide the MVC team to deliver outstanding designs and results. Foster and monitor advancements. Coordinate and enable the on-time, on-budget, on-specs accomplishment of technical milestones, including the first integrated HTS-LM demonstrator, non-fusion and fusion magnets, experimental and commercial stellarators.

  • Conduct conceptual and detailed design reviews.

  • Make timely decisions and recommendations based on the information available.

  • Plan for safe prototyping and operations in harsh nuclear environments characterized by high mechanical stresses, strong magnetic fields, high electrical currents, very high and low temperatures, high-pressure gases and liquids, etc.

  • Design and lead experiments to de-risk MVC systems and test them to their limits.

  • Supervise the preparation of internal technical documentation as well as technical specifications for calls for tender, and follow up on their progress.

  • Agree with team-members their quarterly and yearly objectives, and personal development plans (courses, summer schools etc.). Follow up on them. Resolve conflicts. Identify and address individual and team needs.

Responsibilities as an individual

  • Doer/manager. You will mostly be a manager, but we expect you to lead by example and not lose contact with your older self, when you were a great doer. In other words, we expect you to occasionally contribute to design and modeling, in person.

  • Prepare and deliver overview papers and keynote talks at research conferences.

  • Identify partners (suppliers, customers, collaborators, testing facilities etc.) by leveraging on your own network as well as the company network and expanding them. Set up and cultivate partnerships and collaborations. Maximize co-creation of value.

Responsibilities as a team-player (w.r.t. to other company departments, external stakeholders etc.)

  • Receive/give feedback from/to team members.

  • Work closely with (external):

    • Suppliers

    • Sub-contracted machine shops, welders etc.

    • Commissioning agents and regulators

  • Work closely with (internal):

    • The CTO

    • The Head of HTS film deposition, for example on mechanical properties of HTS tapes, substrates and holding structures.

    • The Head of liquid metal R&D, for example on cooling requirements and corrosion-resistant materials.

    • The Head of fusion science, for example on the optimal plasma boundary shape, coil winding surfaces and HTS corrugations.

    • The Head of heat, diagnostics and shielding, for example on port sizes and locations, and interface systems.

    • The Chief Project Officer (CPO), on MVC project planning and its relation to other projects.

    • The Buyer, in managing contracts with custom part manufacturers.

    • The Financial Planner, on projections and allocations.

    • Busin

Qualifications -essential:

    • 15+ years of experience (at least 5 as a doer and 10 as a manager) -in international labs or in the industry- in design, modeling, manufacturing, and testing in at least 3 of the following areas:

      • Magnet technology

      • Vacuum technology

      • Structural engineering

      • Cryogenics

      • Heat transfer

Qualifications -desirable:

  • PhD degree in electrical, industrial, mechanical or nuclear engineering, or closely related field.

  • Experience in designing, purchasing, testing or using:

    • HTS and/or Low Temperature Superconductivity (LTS).

    • Permanent magnets

    • Copper coils

    • Vacuum pumps and other vacuum equipment

    • Working fluids for heat extraction (water, supercritical CO2, liquid metals, etc.) and refrigeration (liquid N2, He gas, liquid He, etc.)

  • Experience or familiarity with one or more of the following industries: energy, electricity, big science, particle accelerators, medical, metallurgy, innovative materials.

  • French (B2).

  • Detailed knowledge of material parameters at cryogenic temperatures and in high magnetic fields.

  • Detailed knowledge of nuclear civil engineering, remote handling and waste management.
