Renaissance Fusion is the first Magnetic Confinement Fusion company in the EU. We are building the first net-energy producing stellarator by combining proprietary innovations in modular design, the manufacturing of next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets, and liquid walls. We are forming a team of the brightest, most driven scientists and engineers to realize and commercialize our non-fusion HTS magnets within 2 years, and fusion magnets and integrated fusion solutions within 10 years.
Specifically, we are looking for an experienced and talented HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Engineer to support the development of Renaissance Fusion in compliance with health, safety and environmental standards and regulations.
Our team is young, agile, international, and based in the exciting city of Grenoble, by the French Alps.
Responsibilities
Regulation:
Carry out a permanent regulatory and legal watch on HSE aspects (directives, standards, decrees, labour law, environment law, etc.)
Identify the regulatory framework for all activities, prototypes and machines present in the workshop: lifting, magnets, cryogenics, electricity, pressure equipment, chemicals, handling of low-level radioactive products (Tritium, irradiated products)
Lead the certification process (ISO14001, CE…)
Risk Prevention
Identify and assess all professional and environmental risks, define mitigation plans, and monitor them
Regularly talk with technicians, research engineers and lab staff to anticipate new safety and environment needs in the lab
Ensure the compliance of equipment and the building with the various stakeholders (certification body, Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing, building owner, firefighters, etc.)
Ensure the proper storage of hazardous equipment (chemicals, metals, tools, etc.) in the workshop
Ensure the reliability of the equipment and plan the revisions, certifications and work necessary for the reliability of the installations (lifting, first aid kit, defibrillators, air conditioning for computer racks, etc.)
Approach external contractors and supervise the installation of HSE-compliant systems. Ensure the safety during the siteworks (electricity, water, office, etc.).
Set up the necessary signage in the workshop and the building (emergency exit, fire extinguishers, circulation corridors, mandatory equipment, etc.)
Organize prevention actions (fire drills, equipment checks, awareness of environmental impacts)
Define with the COO the best insurance plan
Training and Continuous Improvement
Train the current team and new employees in health, safety and environmental instructions and ensure their application (compulsory wearing of gloves, safety shoes, etc.)
With human resources, plan staff training: work at height, use of the bridge, forklift, first aid, fire, etc.
Analyse incidents, near misses, accidents and occupational illnesses and implement preventive and corrective actions (training, review of signage, work, layout of workstations, etc.)
Put in place an effective waste sorting policy (sorting skip, bin, etc.)
Organize audits and certifications to make Renaissance Fusion a cutting-edge company in HSE aspects, thus improving the employer brand.
Perform monthly activity reporting through a dashboard
Qualifications:
Required
Bac+5 in the Hygiene, Safety and Environment field
5 years of minimum experience in an industrial environment or in laboratory/applied research
3 years of minimum experience in a similar position
Mastery of French regulations in terms of HSE
Fluency in French and English (minimum C1)
Rigorous, organized, pedagogue
Force of proposal, reactive
Good oral and written communication
Desired
Experience in the nuclear or chemical or semiconductor industry
Occupational Lifeguard Training (French “SST”)
Fluency in French and English (C2)
Knowledge of international safety regulations
