Renaissance Fusion is the first Magnetic Confinement Fusion company in the EU. We are building the first net-energy-producing stellarator by combining proprietary innovations in modular design, the manufacturing of next-generation High-Temperature Superconducting (HTS) magnets, and liquid walls. We are forming a team of the brightest, most driven scientists and engineers to realize and commercialize our non-fusion HTS magnets within 2 years, and fusion magnets and integrated fusion solutions within 10 years.

Specifically, we are looking for a talented, energetic and creative material engineer / chemical engineer / metallurgist for liquid lithium applications such as our in-house experiments involving High-Temperature Superconductors and for our stellarators Chartreuse 1 and Chartreuse 2.

Our team is young, agile, international and based in the exciting city of Grenoble, by the French Alps.

Responsibilities

Individual research responsibilities

  • Identify the materials to be used in in-house experiments and fusion power plants, which are compatible with liquid lithium flows at high temperatures

  • Design and operate experiments to conduct static and dynamic liquid lithium corrosion tests on structural materials

  • Characterize corrosion products and changes in the microstructure of samples

  • Carry out physical-chemical measurements to determine the phase transitions and precipitation of lithium hydride, lithium deuteride and lithium tritide

  • Setup and sustain external collaborations with academic and/or industrial partners on corrosion topic.

Responsibilities as a team member

  • Aid mechanical engineers and experimentalists in the design and construction of stellarator parts and in-house experiments (choice of materials, surface treatments, safety regulations…)

Qualifications -essential:

  • PhD degree or equivalent in materials science, chemical engineering, metallurgy or related field

  • 3+ years experience in liquid metal chemistry

  • 3+ years hands on experience in surface characterization: microscopy (optical, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy…), spectroscopy (X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy…)

  • Physical metallurgy, crystallography, surface chemistry, kinetics, mass transfers, reduction-oxidation

  • Written and oral communication skills. Ability to explain complicated concepts clearly and concisely.

  • Organizational and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, curiosity and willingness to learn.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.

Qualifications -desirable:

  • Experience with health and safety requirements for the handling of flammable/hot/toxic solids, liquids and gases in general, and alkali in particular

  • Experience in isotopic separation

  • Corrosion modeling and thermodynamic modeling

  • Familiarity with materials and processes used in the nuclear sector (fission and/or fusion)
